If you've ever wondered what the heck the treaties say, well, here you go. Next time you get shrieked at to "go educate yourself" you can say you are :)
Here is a PDF breakdown of the numbered treaties and the ceded lands click here and see what the text actually says, what it actually means. You can now read the numbered treaties and make your own decisions. The entire government page is provided above.
In 2000 the Nisga'a people signed an agreement, but not a treaty. In 2007 the Tsawwassen peoples signed the first modern day treaty, followed by the Maa-Nulth peoples in 2009. There are many more in various stages of negotiations. Unfortunately, the vast majority of agreements being made are behind closed doors, the taxpayer never knows what's being agreed to. They are financial agreements and not treaties. Nothing is being settled, it's just being put off for another day.
Not only do the natives not get closure to their claims, but the taxpayer is left on the hook into perpetuity. Our elected officials are too afraid to deal with the issues, and instead, just make financial agreements to appease the natives. As we've seen, the appeasement is short lived. Can't say as though I blame them, these claims have been a bone of contention for generations! Time to get on with it..don't you think?!
